Historic Preservation and Adaptive Reuse 101 - Best Practices

Ms. Hollie Cook, with Knox Heritage, will present at our lunch meeting about historic preservation. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Understand the mission and impact of Knox Heritage: Participants will gain a broad understanding of the history, mission, and role of Knox Heritage in preserving and promoting the significance of local historic structures and sites, including its impact on community development and heritage conservation.
- Identify key principles and processes of historic preservation: Participants will be equipped to recognize the core principles of historic preservation, including the methods and criteria used to evaluate a building’s historical significance and its eligibility for preservation designation.
- Distinguish between preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction: Participants will learn to differentiate the four primary approaches to historic building treatment— preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, and reconstruction—as defined by the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and understand how these approaches influence design decisions and project outcomes.
- Analyze the economic advantages of historic preservation through adaptive reuse: Participants will explore the economic benefits of adaptive reuse, understanding how repurposing historical buildings can contribute to sustainable development, enhance property values, and offer financial incentives such as tax credits and grants.
Earns 1 hour AIA/CES credit.
