Several members of the CSI Knoxville student chapter went on a great site visit to the University of Tennessee Knoxville-Oak Ridge National Laboratory (UTK-ORNL) Joint Institute for Advanced Materials (JIAM) building on the located on the former Cherokee Farms site on Alcoa Highway. They toured several of the advanced material research labs, conference rooms, mechanical and electrical rooms, and observed the MEP systems in the open ceiling spaces of the labs. The building houses labs with electron microscopes, molecular beam equipment, ion beam materials research and micro-processing research equipment. Some of the features of the building include pre-patina copper skin panels, fire rated glass panels in the atrium floor, and conference rooms with automated video cameras and microphones to follow speakers and participants in the conference. JIAM operates with a multidisciplinary team of scientists from UT and ORNL, and conducts research at the forefront of modern materials science. More information about the facility is at http://jiam.utk.edu/about.php . Special thanks to Michelle L. Crowder, AIA, Assistant Director Administration, Office of Capital Projects and UT Facilities Planning for arranging and conducting the tour.

Josh Brock [General Shale] and John Hockensmith [MHM] put together a first class product show this year at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Knoxville. The show always draws a wonderful mixture of old friends and new ones from the design and construction industry. The sold out show featured new products and services. Registrants were greeted by the Associated Construction Women (ACW) who was gracious to volunteer their services. The new component director for AIA, Dale Powers, was manning the AIA booth to greet visitors also. Knox County Codes department was well represented and was able to talk with lots of designers and builders. The food was fantastic. [we didn't know that shrimp grew that large!!] Thank you for all the volunteer efforts and see you again next year.

Thanks to the East Tennessee Community Design Center and Wayne Blasius and Josh Shaffer for allowing CSI to use their conference room again. Thanks also to Kenny McMann with Morin Corporation who left a sick family behind in Atlanta to present an informative presentation on Custom Curved Natural Metal Roof & Wall Systems. Kenny talked about aluminum, galvanized, stainless, copper and titanium metal panels, their installation methods, and applications in great detail. The Knoxville CSI chapter had 12 attendees at today’s Lunch and Learn with a Panera Bread lunch provided by Kenny and Morin Corporation. Thanks to Jeremy Shipp with Johnson & Galyon for recruiting Kenny as a speaker and organizing another great Lunch & Learn.
